The Offbeat Groom Gang

'cuz guys sometimes have ideas too!

Let's face it, tuxedos are boring and uncomfortable.

Show me a groom or groomsmen half-way through a reception who is still completely dressed up, and I'll tell you that you've spent too much time on Photoshop! I've been to more than one wedding throughout my life and I've been a best man and a groomsmen before. By the time the food and first dances were over, I was out of the coat and had the tie dangling around my shoulders with the top buttons of my shirt undone. It's just too much! Let's look at some things that this offbeat groom has looked at for wedding apparel:

I think this is a fantastic ensemble! It's comfortable, yet elegant, with a lot of the fancy trimmings you would see in a somewhat formal occasion. It's comfortable and debonaire without the stuffy tie and stiff, high shirt collar. The jacket can be removed and it will still have some fashion sense. This is what I'm hoping for my wedding.

This would definitely be better for a tropical wedding, but again, it's not constricting at all. It's loose, it's comfortable and it's got stamina. By stamina, I mean that it can be worn for SEVERAL hours without driving the individual completely insane. A simple collared shirt, untucked, with some nice slacks or pants and some comfortable shoes or even sandals/flip-flops.

Now, this might be a bit more theme-ridden, but it follows the same concept as the first picture. A long overcoat or duster that can be removed. In this picture he has a long-sleeved, button up shirt underneath (notice the lack of a tie), and he's wearing some tight, long suede (maybe leather) pants which could use suspenders, but certainly isn't required. Also, some leather boots which should be comfortable to the wearer, of course.

Those are some ideas! I'm interested to see what your thoughts are!

By the way, I did move this conversation from The Offbeat Bride Tribe, because it was such a hit there!

I find myself veering ever more into the Firefly aesthetic simply because I have many cultural influences to incorporate and, as I mentioned, I love textures. Wool, leather, bright silks. This is a large influence on the richness of the Firefly universe of course, and while not overtly, I am subtly drawn into that inspiration. I've been dorking around with an inspiration board but these are certainly some key components.

Oh yes, she will be mine.

Starched. Versatile. Offbeat. Belgian Military Chef.

To visualize the concept.

Because I can.

I cant find a good image but last week I saw a guy wearing a suit with a hoodie and I think I am going to steal that look. Also we are having custom Chuck Taylors made myself, my best man and the ring bearer.

where did you stumble across those "belgian military chef" jackets! Those are awesome!

Right? Well, interestingly my b2b is an avid knitter, and there was a pattern in a recent catalogue for a 'military style' sweater with heavy-weight wool cabling. I was highly intrigued; although it was a womans pattern, it could easily be adapted to my strapping physique.

www.crookedbrook.com is a huge maker of chefs jackets, particularly for women, and I like that they gave me ideas about completely different jacket cuts and top styles for guys rather than suit/lapels in whatever variety.

Then, dorking around some more (unemployment isn't all bad for a while) I figured that, since we're both rather tactile, crafty people, we should make what we can't find or refuse to pay for. www.folkwear.com has some kicking patterns, where I found that one, also. So we'll make it, put some flashy asian silk on the cuff-turnover or something.

There are lots of cool styles out there. For something completely different, try a sherwani, for instance.

not in these coulours per se...but the suit with the hoodie, I really like!

With some badass custom chucks, that will totally work. My b2b currently has a thing for flames. As in hot-rod'ing the KitchenAid. She said you should have flair on your hood and/or drawstrings to match the chucks, and she also says it might be good to keep your trousers an inch or two short so your Chucks speak loud and clear.

So good luck, seems like you're on the right track!

I had a friend a while back who dressed up as a Ferengi for a TNG themed wedding, and insisted on the energy-whip weapon they first appeared with because it bothered him that they never returned. Said it was coolest weapon in the universe after the lightsaber.

By the way, if you're looking for an excuse to own a tricorder... Whoa.

Thanks for the advice! I have found these for cufflinks:

and these are my choice for shoes in our wedding colours (with wedding date embroidered!)

Nice.
Very nice. Come to think of it, I might have a TNG uniform pin around in my stuff somewhere. I can't be sure, but I'll let you know. You know, it seems to me that if you're already taking creative liberties with the suit you might as well throw in small bits of crazy if you want. Pips, a stripe, a patch, whatever!

Do you plan on wearing those treads again, or keeping them stored or framed or somesuch? Signed, blessed or what have you? Digging the gray canvas.

Hang on. I just got a visual for you: create a Ten Forward-esque bah'. Just some green neon and a mirror?

I hadn't really thought about what I was going to do with the shoes after. I just talked about it with Sarah and we decided that I would traipse about Europe with them during the HM and then store or display them.
I'd hate to see them fall into the same state of disrepair most of my chucks are in. ;)

Ok- I think those are too plain. Chucks are cool and all, but they're just not...elegant. In their very nature, they are trying to be dressed down. Chucks are dressed down. Period. WEdding? Maybe dressed up? Perhaps a certain pair of custom chucks. B?ut those do not seem special, dressed up, festive, thrilled, exuberant to me.

I mean no offense, I just say what I feel.

I'm sorry. I didn't realise I was on Elegantgroom.com ;)

Those Chucks so much as they are in our wedding colours and will match my suit.
