There are a few companies out there that deal in 'green' gold, as well, that is, recycled or reclaimed gold, for just such purposes as setting existing stones or fixings. You may well have come across such ideas, but greenkarat is one example. Still a bit rich for my blood but I had my eye on a modest, perfect fit for my b2b here for a while.
We aren't using recycled gold but the stones in her ring are family diamonds from her grandmonther and a pearl from mine. This reduces the environmental impact somewhat and makes the ring just that much more meaningful. Silver for her and possibly titanuim for myself are the metals of choice so far.
Quick addendum here.
Apart from all the material choices and associated symbolism we've discussed, consider well how your ring will fit into your quotidian activities. This isn't a big point, just remember that there's no cutting through an aircraft grade titanium ring if your finger is caught up in finicky machinery, say.
No way baby. That's your finger coming off, instead.
Actually, upon further research, I've found that this drawback is rather overstated. In fact, jewelery metals and alloys, including titanium and tungsten carbide, can be removed in emergency rooms and other such facilities with jewelers saws, or broken with vise pliers.
Of course, it's probably best to remove it and keep it safe in the event of working with finicky heavy machine tools, anyway.
This sub-addendum is motivated by my shift in preference to a tungsten carbide ring after realizing that, while initially my first choice, titanium is extremely light. I guess I just didn't internalize this obvious fact, but it feels like aluminum on your finger. Tungsten is just a weightier, chunkier presence without being big bling. *shrug* Just thought I'd point that out.
It's usually a weekend-long workshop and you work one-on-one as a couple with a professional "ring maker." They work with you to make a bunch of different styles, including mokume gane.
We have been thinking about doing this, so I figured I'd share. Only thing is, it's a little more expensive than a lot of the rings we've found elsewhere (we're only looking online really).
Hello fellow soon to be married men-
So I have a bit of an issue...
My family, is about as conservative as they come. They are also, EXTREMELY outspoken about it. I'm already catching immense flak from the point that we're not getting hitched in...
on Tuesday
Michael Deneen The little soon-to-be misses is a big Off Beat Bride user. So I figured, what the heck, eh?
I have to apologize on my part for being gone for so long. It was a hectic year and I spent most of it redoing our new place pretty much from scratch. Our wedding day came and went, so I'll have to do some catching up for newcomers.
Very good poi...
